Lino Prints

Lino print, or linocut, is a relief printing method where designs are carved into soft linoleum and then printed on paper or fabric. Although you can use multiple colors, most prints are done with a single color.

For this assignment you will designing your own print design.

Making your lino-cut

Choose the size of linoleum you want to use.
Trace around the linoleum onto your paper. This will give you a box to work in so your design fits the linoleum.
Do your drawing inside that box.
Get your drawing approved before moving on to the next step.

Transfer Your Drawing

1 - Use an ebony pencil on the back of your drawing. Make sure to cover only the areas that have your original drawing. You do NOT need to cover the entire paper.

2 - Cut out your drawing so it's the same size as your linoleum. Tape your cut out drawing onto the linoleum. Use a regular #2 or harder pencil to trace your drawing on the linoleum. This will transfer the pencil on the back to linoleum.

When you're ready to make your prints follow the instructions below. You'll need to make the following prints:

A total of 4 prints.
2 different types of paper (watercolor, drawing, posterboard, or colored paper.
At least 2 different colors.
You will also need to embellish (decorate) one of your prints with watercolor, marker, or colored pencil.

In addition you will be graded on the "neatness" of your print. Unless you're embellishing your print it should have clean lines without missing spots in the ink. The paper around your print should also be clean and free of messy spots. You need to have at least 1 "nice" print in your group of 4.

This print is okay, but it has gaps in the tree where there wasn't enough ink. There are also spots in the white area where the ink got on to the paper.

This print is great! It has clean black areas and no extra ink smudged around it.

embellishing a print

Once you've finished cutting your linoleum it's time to print! Double check it to make sure there aren't any little pieces left hanging on your linoleum.
Next choose your paper and inks.
For printing you'll need a:
- pallete tray
- 2 ink rollers
- water and rag for cleanup
- and a couple sheets of printer paper
- a piece of cardboard to put under your print
Set your area up by putting down your cardboard first.
Place your lino block on the cardboard.
Put some ink in your pallete tray and roll the roller in it until it's covered in ink.
Roll the ink on to your lino-block.
Place a sheet of paper under your lino-block so you don't get ink on the paper outside your printing area.
Place the paper for your print on your inked lino-block, gently press paper down and use the clean roller to push it down more.
Remove your print and marvel at your beautiful art!
