Sculpey: This is a polymer clay. It is soft and pliable right out of the package and hardens permanently when baked in a home oven.
Sculpey is soft, sticky when overworked, and needs to be baked to survive. Keeping your workspace clean is key!
Conditioning and Rolling: Roll pieces of Sculpey between your palms or use an acrylic roller on a smooth surface to flatten sheets or condition the clay so it doesn't crack.
Bulking: Because thick pieces of polymer clay can crack or underbake, wrap aluminum foil into the rough shape of your core, then wrap a thin layer of Sculpey around it.
Joining Pieces (Slab and Coil): Press pieces firmly together. Unlike oil clay, you can use a drop of rubbing alcohol or liquid polymer clay as a "glue" to help raw pieces bond securely before baking.
Baking for Permanence: Once finished, place your sculpt on a baking sheet (glass or ceramic tile works best) and bake according to the package instructions—typically 275°F (135°C) for about 15-30 minutes per 1/4 inch of thickness.
